God’s Armor Helps You Stand Firm in Spiritual Warfare
Adapted from the sermon “The King's Authority, the Priest's Confession,” preached by Pastor Donald Gray on .
Ephesians 6:13 shows how to stand in spiritual warfare by putting on God’s armor, using His Word, and staying faithful through prayer and perseverance.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand the evil days and having done all, to stand.
Spiritual warfare can feel confusing because the pressure may show up through people, thoughts, fear, pain, or circumstances. But I want you to understand this clearly: God has not told us to panic, run, or fight people. He told us to stand, use what He has given us, and stay strong in Him.
How do I stand firm in spiritual warfare?
You stand firm by putting on the whole armor of God and refusing to give up your position when the battle is still in front of you. Ephesians 6:13 says, “Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand the evil days and having done all, to stand.”
Having done all, stand. The enemy may still be in front of you. The situation may still be facing you. Stand anyway.
That posture matters because standing says, “I am not moving away from what God said.” I told the church, when Job was down in his condition, God told him to stand up like a man. There comes a point when you stop letting the pressure decide your posture.
Who am I really fighting in spiritual warfare?
You are not fighting people; the real battle is against spiritual powers, so do not turn your brothers and sisters into the enemy. Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers and the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Mark that down. God did not give you authority so you could trample on other people. I do not have authority over you, and you do not have authority over me.
The fight is spiritual. That means our response cannot be merely physical or carnal. We have to recognize where the battle is coming from and use the weapons God actually gave us.
What weapons does God give me for spiritual warfare?
God gives you faith, salvation, His Word, and prayer so you can resist the enemy without relying on fleshly weapons. Ephesians 6:17-18 says, “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. Praying always with all prayer and supplication.”
The Word of God is your sword. Use it. Get acquainted with it. Read it, know it, and have it ready when deception comes.
Jesus answered the enemy with, “It is written.” That is the pattern I want you to see. When the enemy tells you something that contradicts God, you need to know where to go in the Word and answer with what God said.
Prayer is part of the armor too. Pray in the Spirit. Pray in your own language. Spend time with God until you become familiar with His presence and His Word.
And do not pray only for yourself. Paul said to pray with perseverance for all the saints. Spiritual warfare is not “me, myself, and I.” We stand together.
How do I fight wrong thoughts and deception?
You fight deception by bringing every thought under the authority of God’s Word instead of accepting every thought that enters your mind. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 says, “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought in captivity to the obedience of God.”
Every thought means every thought. Some thoughts may sound good and still not be godly. So bring the thought to the Word.
That is why knowing Scripture matters. The enemy uses deception. He wants you to believe you have no authority, no weapon, and no way to stand. But when you know the truth, you can recognize the lie.
Whatever you are facing, start here: stand. Put on the armor. Use the Word. Pray. Keep praying. Do not make people your enemy, and do not let deception move you from what God has said. You have heard God’s Word. Now use it to defeat the works of the enemy.
Questions from this reading
- What does it mean to stand in spiritual warfare?
- It means refusing to move away from what God has said, even when the battle or situation is still in front of you. God tells believers to put on His armor and, after doing all they can, continue to stand.
- How do I use God’s Word in spiritual warfare?
- Know what God has said and answer deception with His Word, just as Jesus responded with, “It is written.” The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, so you have to know it before you can use it.
- Should Christians pray only for themselves during spiritual warfare?
- No. Ephesians 6 teaches believers to pray with perseverance for all the saints, not only for themselves.
