God's Blessings Can Reach the Next Generation
Adapted from the sermon “The Walk of Life,” preached by Pastor Donald Gray on .
Genesis 12:1-3 reveals how God's promise to Abraham reached beyond his own life and how our obedience can bless the generations that follow us.
All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.
What if the blessing God has for your life is not just for you? What if what God is doing in you right now is meant to touch your children, your grandchildren, and people you may never meet?
I want you to think about that. Because sometimes we become so concerned with what we want right now that we forget God is looking beyond us. We want the blessing, we want the answer, and we want everything to happen in our lifetime.
But let me tell you something. Whatever God gives you is not always just for you. It may be for your next generation.
Why Did God Bless Abraham and Promise to Bless Others Through Him?
God blessed Abraham because He had a purpose for his life that would reach beyond Abraham himself and touch families throughout the earth.
Look at Genesis 12:1-3. God called Abraham to leave his country, his relatives, and his father's household. Then God promised to make him into a great nation, bless him, and make him a blessing to others.
Notice something important. God did not just say He would bless Abraham. He said other people would be blessed through him.
Now let me ask you a question. Is anybody being blessed by you?
We love talking about how God has blessed us. We thank Him for what He has provided, for what He has done, and for what we have received. But are we thinking about the people around us?
God was not simply preparing Abraham to receive something. He was preparing Abraham to become a blessing.
And that is something we must understand about our own walk with God. The blessing should not stop with us.
Does God's Promise to Abraham Include Future Generations?
Yes, God's promise to Abraham specifically included his descendants, showing that God's plan extended beyond Abraham's lifetime.
In Genesis 12:7, after Abraham arrived in Canaan, God appeared to him and promised the land to his descendants.
Did you notice that? God did not say Abraham himself would receive everything. He spoke about those who would come after him.
I want you to mark that down.
Sometimes we become selfish. We become self-centered. We want everything for ourselves, and we are not thinking about the future.
But God is always looking at the present and the future. He knows what He is doing right now, and He knows what He is preparing for the next generation.
Abraham was 75 years old when he left Haran, as we read in Genesis 12:4. Some people would look at that age and say it was too late to begin something new.
But Abraham obeyed God. He stepped out, and God continued revealing His promise.
You may think you are too old to accomplish what God has called you to do. I am telling you that Abraham was 75 when he began this journey.
You can start right where you are.
How Does Obedience to God Affect the Next Generation?
Our obedience matters because God can work through it to accomplish purposes that reach beyond our own lives.
Look again at Genesis 12:1. God told Abraham to leave everything familiar and go to a land He would show him.
God did not give Abraham every detail before he moved. Abraham had to trust Him enough to take that first step.
When he arrived in Canaan, God revealed more of His promise. Abraham built an altar and worshiped the Lord.
Now think about that. Had Abraham remained where he was, refusing to obey, he would not have taken that journey of faith.
Some of us are waiting for God to explain everything before we move. But obedience comes first.
And sometimes the things God accomplishes through your obedience will benefit people who come after you.
That is why I keep telling you that obedience is important. You cannot replace it by simply giving something to God. God wants you to respond to His call.
How Can We Leave a Spiritual Legacy for Our Children?
We can leave a spiritual legacy by obeying God's calling, sharing the gospel, and helping others come to know Jesus Christ.
I remember when God saved me. It was a Wednesday night, and I remember that He called me to share the gospel. From that day, I went out and began doing what He called me to do.
Now I want you to think about your own family.
You may know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. You may have that assurance in your heart. But what about your son? What about your daughter? What about your cousin or your coworker?
Have you thought about whether they know Him too?
We cannot be satisfied with only thinking about ourselves. God has called us to care about others.
Remember Abraham. God called him, he obeyed, and the promise reached beyond him.
The same question remains for us: Are we living only for what we can receive, or are we allowing God to use our lives to bless somebody else?
You have one life to live. And how you live it matters.
So I am asking you today to be obedient to God. Take that first step. Answer His call.
Because what God does in your life may become a blessing to the generations that follow you.
