John 7:37 shows why God calls us to repent, hear His Word afresh, receive the Holy Spirit, and become ready for the harvest He desires.

If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
John 7:37

God is calling us to hear what He is saying, turn from the ways we have gone against Him, and prepare ourselves for what He wants to do. The sound of the trumpet is not just noise. It is a call to pay attention.

What does God’s trumpet call mean for us?

God’s trumpet call tells us that this is an opportunity for something new to begin in our lives.

In Leviticus 23, the Feast of Trumpets announced the beginning of a new time. The trumpet was the shofar, and its sound carried meaning for the people of God.

That sound also points us toward the Word of God. When the Word of God is spoken, there is a trumpet sound going forth. God is speaking, and we need to hear what He is saying.

That does not mean God gives us some new revelation that contradicts His Word. He never does that. Fresh revelation means the Holy Spirit brings insight into what the Word of God means in your life right now.

You can hear the same passage again and God can speak to you in a fresh way because you have changed. Your circumstances have changed. The Holy Spirit takes that Word and gives fresh anointing and insight into your spirit.

Why does the trumpet call us to repentance?

The trumpet calls us to repentance because we cannot make ourselves right with God.

The Feast of Trumpets leads toward the Day of Atonement. The sound tells the people that the time is drawing near to remember the ways they have turned against God and to repent.

Here is the problem. We have a way of justifying ourselves.

I remember an eight-year-old girl whose parents had told her to return from the lake in time for church. She came back late. When they asked her why, she gave one of the clearest descriptions of the human condition I have ever heard: she said she had justified herself.

In other words, she explained away her own behavior.

We do that when we run from God. We excuse ourselves. We try to make ourselves right.

But you cannot save yourself. I cannot save you. Parents cannot save their children or grandchildren. The only one who can justify us and make us right with God is Jesus.

Atonement has been made. Jesus is the Lamb who was sacrificed.

How does repentance prepare us for what God wants to do?

Repentance prepares us to receive the life of the Holy Spirit and participate in God’s purposes.

After the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement came the Feast of Tabernacles. That is the setting we find in John chapter 7.

The trumpets sound. The people of God confess their sins and get their lives right. Then there is a purpose for what comes next.

There is a harvest.

The Feast of Tabernacles points toward a great harvest at the end of the age. God is not simply calling us to repent so we can feel sorry about what we have done. He is preparing His people to be filled with His Spirit.

That is why Jesus stood on the last day of the feast and cried out in John 7:37, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.”

God wants thirsty people to come to Jesus.

How does the Holy Spirit prepare us for harvest?

The Holy Spirit prepares us by flowing through our inner person with life, hope, cleansing, and divine power we cannot produce ourselves.

During the Feast of Tabernacles, great vessels of water were poured out where everybody could see them. Jesus stood there and pointed people beyond that temporary water to what He could give them.

That physical water would evaporate. It would disappear into the soil. But Jesus was speaking about living water, and that living water is the Holy Spirit.

There is a move of the Spirit for you.

The Holy Spirit wants to flow out of your inner person. He cleanses something inside of you. He brings life, vitality, hope, and divine energy that you cannot create on your own.

And this is not only about one individual. God wants the river to flow through the whole body together.

So hear the trumpet. Listen again to the Word of God. Let the Holy Spirit show you where you need to repent. Come to Jesus and drink.

God is preparing His people for His purposes and His harvest.

Questions from this reading

The trumpet announces an opportunity for something new to begin and calls us to listen to what God is saying. It also reminds us to repent and get our lives right with God.
What does fresh revelation from God mean?
Fresh revelation does not contradict the Word of God. The Holy Spirit gives fresh insight into what God’s Word means for our lives.
