Luke 4:1-4 shows how Jesus faced temptation with God's Word and the Holy Spirit, teaching us to trust God's truth and walk in His power every day.

Man shall not live by bread alone
Luke 4:4

What do you do when temptation comes and you know you have the power to do something about it? Do you react according to your feelings, or do you stand on what God has spoken?

Jesus faced that very situation in the wilderness. He was hungry, the devil challenged Him, and He had the power to respond however He wanted. But Jesus showed us something important about God's Word, the Holy Spirit, and the control that comes from knowing who you are in God.

How Did Jesus Overcome Temptation in the Wilderness?

Jesus overcame temptation by standing on God's Word and exercising control over the power He already possessed.

In Luke 4:1, we read that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit into the wilderness. He spent 40 days there being tempted by the devil, and during those days He ate nothing.

After those 40 days, Jesus was hungry. The devil knew He was hungry and challenged Him to turn a stone into bread.

Now, let me tell you something. Jesus had the power to do exactly that. He was not helpless in the wilderness.

But what did Jesus say? In Luke 4:4, He answered with the words, "Man shall not live by bread alone."

He pointed the devil back to God's Word. Mark that down.

Jesus could have opened His mouth and commanded the devil to leave. He had that power because He was the Word. But He did not use His power simply because He was being challenged.

Why? Because Jesus was demonstrating control. He understood God's Word, and He knew when and how to exercise the power He possessed.

Why Is God's Word More Important Than Physical Bread?

God's Word is more important than physical bread because bread sustains our bodies, but God's Word teaches us how to live according to His will.

I want you to look at Deuteronomy 8:3. God allowed the children of Israel to experience hunger in the wilderness, but He also fed them with manna.

Why did He do that? He wanted them to understand that their lives depended on more than the food they could see and touch.

The manna was something they had never experienced before. Even their fathers had not known it.

And when they saw it, their question was essentially, what is this?

Now, I want to ask you something. Are you looking at God's Word and asking the same question?

God was teaching Israel to know Him. In Deuteronomy 8:2, He explained that those 40 years in the wilderness were meant to humble them and test what was in their hearts.

He wanted to know whether they would keep His commandments.

Jesus brought that same truth before the devil in the wilderness. His answer was not based on His hunger. It was based on what God had spoken.

And we need to learn that lesson ourselves.

Why Didn't Jesus Use His Power Against the Devil?

Jesus did not use His power to destroy the devil because He had control and understood the purpose for which He had come.

Think about that for a moment. Somebody comes to you, disrespects you, and threatens you. You know you have the strength to respond.

Wouldn't you be tempted to use that strength?

Come on. We are human. We know what that feels like.

But suppose you have the control to stand there and show mercy instead. You do not have to prove your strength by reacting to everything somebody says.

That is what I want you to understand about Jesus.

He had the power to deal with the devil immediately, but He was not deceived. He knew God's Word.

And remember, Jesus did not come to this earth just for Himself. He came for you and me.

His life was given for us. That is why I keep reminding you that obedience to God is important.

What Happened After Jesus' 40 Days in the Wilderness?

Jesus came out of the wilderness in power, and His ministry demonstrated the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

In Luke 4:18, Jesus declared, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me."

He spoke about being anointed to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives, and bring freedom to those who were oppressed.

Look at the difference. Jesus went through the wilderness, but He did not remain there.

I keep telling you that after 40 comes 41.

The wilderness was not the end. There was something on the other side.

And I want you to understand that the Holy Spirit is not somebody we should reject or put into a little box.

We need Him. We need His power, His guidance, and His presence in our lives.

Some of us have been going through difficulties and blaming everything on the devil. But sometimes God is using what we are going through to humble us and bring us closer to Him.

So what should we do?

Surrender. Ask God what He wants us to do. Allow His Word to correct us and His Spirit to lead us.

Jesus showed us that temptation does not have to control our response. God's Word must have that place in our lives.

And when we come through the wilderness, I want us to come out changed, walking in obedience and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

That is what I want for you. That is what I want for myself. Not just to hear the Word of God, but to live it.
