Jesus Defeated the Powers Fighting Against You
Adapted from the sermon “How Is Your Posture in These End Times?,” preached by Pastor Donald Gray on .
Colossians 2:15 shows that Jesus disarmed spiritual rulers and authorities, so believers can stand in the authority He has given them.
He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them.
Sometimes we live as though the enemy still has the final word. We blame people, fight people, and let deception turn us against one another. But I want you to understand what Jesus has already done.
Jesus did not come out of the grave defeated. He came out with power and authority. The question is whether we are going to live like we know that.
Did Jesus already defeat spiritual powers?
Yes, Jesus already defeated the spiritual rulers and authorities that stood against us.
Colossians 2:15 says, “He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them.”
That is important. Daniel had to wait while spiritual conflict was taking place. He prayed, and the answer was heard, but there was resistance connected to the prince of Persia.
Then Jesus came.
I told the church, Jesus defeated the principalities and powers once and for all. He triumphed over them. He came back with power and authority.
We need to understand what Jesus accomplished. If we really understand what He did, we will stop living as though Satan has unlimited authority over us.
The enemy has been defeated, but he still works through deception. That is why you have to know what Jesus has done and know what belongs to you because of Him.
What does spiritual authority mean for believers?
Spiritual authority means we can stand against the enemy instead of allowing his deception to control how we think and act.
Let me tell you something. Deception can make you take the authority God gave you and use it against yourself.
You can have authority and still spend your time fighting your brother, your sister, your pastor, your family, or somebody who said something you did not like. That is not where the fight belongs.
I said it plainly: stop using your authority on people and use it against the devil.
If somebody can say something and immediately get your flesh stirred up, then something in you still needs to come under control. You cannot spend your life pointing fingers while the enemy is working through division and deception.
Jesus gave you authority so you can stand.
Your brother is not your enemy. Your sister is not your enemy. The person who offended you is not where your spiritual authority should be aimed.
Stand against the deception.
How does the enemy fight if Jesus has already won?
The enemy fights through deception by trying to convince you to use your own God-given authority in the wrong direction.
That is one of the greatest things I want you to see.
If Satan can get you angry at everybody around you, talking about everybody, blaming everybody, then he has distracted you from where the real battle is.
You start fighting people instead of recognizing what is happening spiritually.
Jesus has already won the victory. That means we are not trying to give Jesus a victory He does not have. We are learning to stand in the victory He already accomplished.
That is why the Word of God matters so much. John saw a sharp two-edged sword coming out of the mouth of Jesus, and I told the church that the Word must come out of our mouths.
You have to know what God has said.
Why should believers stop fighting one another?
Believers should stop fighting one another because we belong to God and we belong to each other.
I told the church, we need one another.
Instead of talking about somebody you have not seen, find out what happened to them. Call them. Text them. Reach out and see what is going on.
Do not automatically decide they have fallen away. You do not know what they may be facing.
Think about the good somebody has done instead of constantly rehearsing the bad. Pray for one another.
The authority Jesus gave us was never an excuse to trample over our brothers and sisters. We are supposed to stand against the enemy, not destroy each other.
Jesus defeated the powers. He gave us authority. Now we have to decide what we are going to do with what He has given us.
I am going to stand.
I am going to use the Word.
And I am not going to let deception make me fight the wrong enemy.
