Genesis 28:3-4 shows us how to speak blessing into the future instead of rehearsing the past, trusting God for what is still ahead.

May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may be an assembly of peoples.
Genesis 28:3

We live so much in the past that sometimes we do not know how to live in the present or the future. We remember what went wrong. We remind people what they did. But God wants us to learn how to speak His promises into what is ahead.

What does it mean to speak into your future?

Speaking into your future means taking what God has said and putting your faith behind it before you see it happen.

Look at Jacob. Before Jacob left his family, his father Isaac blessed him. Genesis 28:3-4 says, “May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may be an assembly of peoples, and give you the blessing of Abraham.”

Do you see what Isaac was doing? He was speaking into his son’s future.

He did not stand there reminding Jacob about everything Jacob had done before. He did not make the past the focus of his words. He spoke about blessing, fruitfulness, descendants, and what God would do ahead of him.

We need to learn from that. Sometimes we keep reminding our children about the past when we ought to be speaking into their future.

How should I speak about my children’s future?

Speak God’s promises over your children and keep speaking beyond the generation you can presently see.

Isaac’s blessing did not stop with Jacob. He spoke about Jacob’s descendants. That means his words were reaching toward generations that had not even arrived yet.

I want you to understand that. Do not just speak to the next generation. Speak to your children, your grandchildren, your great-grandchildren, and the generations coming after them.

If you are serving God, trusting God, and believing God, do not spend all your time talking about what your family has done wrong. Speak about what you are believing God to do in them.

Your words should not keep dragging people backward. Speak forward.

How does faith help me stop living in the past?

Faith helps you move forward because it responds to what God has said before the promise is visible.

Jacob had an experience with God, and God told him what He was going to do. Then Jacob answered. Genesis 28:20 says, “Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going.’”

What was Jacob doing? He was speaking his future.

He was talking about the course ahead of him. He spoke about God keeping him, providing for him, and bringing him back to his father’s house in peace.

That is faith. God wants us to stop living so much in the past and learn how to look toward what He has placed ahead of us.

Can I speak in faith before anything changes?

Yes. David spoke about the outcome of his battle before Goliath had fallen.

David did not pretend Goliath had no weapons. He saw the sword, the spear, and the javelin. But David knew he was coming with something Goliath did not understand.

In 1 Samuel 17:45-47, David said, “I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts,” and then declared what the Lord would do that day.

It had not happened yet. David was telling Goliath what was going to happen.

That is why you cannot allow what you presently see to control everything you say. David saw a giant, but he spoke victory. He looked beyond what was standing in front of him.

What should I do when my past keeps controlling my thoughts?

Bring those thoughts under the authority of what God has said and practice using the spiritual weapons God has given you.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh,” and tells us that our weapons are mighty in God for pulling down strongholds and bringing thoughts into captivity.

Some weapons do not work. Malice does not work. Gossip does not work. Lying does not work.

But you can read the Scriptures. You can speak what God has said. You can remind yourself of what He has spoken into your life.

Some of you have been sitting there waiting for what God spoke to happen. Start speaking it. Stir it up out of your mouth.

Do not spend your life looking backward. God has given you something to say about what is ahead.

Speak His promises. Speak into your children’s future. Speak faith when what you see has not changed yet.

Your past has already happened. Start speaking into your future.
