Galatians 3:13-14 reveals how Jesus brings Abraham's blessing to believers through faith, giving us access to God's promise of the Holy Spirit.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ
Galatians 3:14

God made a promise to Abraham that would reach far beyond his own family. But here is the question I want you to think about: If Abraham lived generations before Jesus Christ, how can you and I receive the same blessing God promised him?

The answer is found in Jesus Christ. The blessing that began with Abraham was never meant to stop with his natural descendants. God had already made a way for the nations to share in that promise, and the book of Galatians tells us exactly how.

What Is the Blessing of Abraham According to the Bible?

The blessing of Abraham is God's covenant promise to bless Abraham and extend that blessing to the nations through faith.

Let me show you something. When God called Abraham, He promised to bless him and bless his seed. Abraham believed God, obeyed His instructions, and remained faithful to the calling upon his life.

In Genesis 18:1, we see the Lord appearing to Abraham. This happened after Abraham obeyed God's command concerning circumcision, even though that obedience involved considerable pain.

Why is that important? Because Abraham was a man who took God's instructions seriously. He did not allow discomfort to stop him from obeying.

God established an everlasting covenant with Abraham. That covenant continued through Isaac, Jacob, and the generations that followed.

But God was doing something much greater than blessing one family. He was preparing a blessing that would eventually reach the whole world.

How Can Gentiles Become Children of Abraham?

Gentiles become children of Abraham through faith, not through physical descent.

Now, I want you to turn to Galatians 3:7. Paul explains that those who are of faith are the children of Abraham.

Did you hear that? The children of Abraham are not identified only by their natural ancestry. Those who believe God are also counted among Abraham's children.

Then look at Galatians 3:8. Scripture tells us that God would justify the Gentiles through faith and that the gospel was preached beforehand to Abraham.

God had already declared that the nations would be blessed through him. This was not something God decided after Jesus came. It was part of His promise from the beginning.

And Galatians 3:9 makes it plain. Those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

So let me ask you something. Are you a Gentile? Have you placed your faith in Jesus Christ?

Then understand what the Word of God is saying. Through faith, you are included in the blessing God promised Abraham.

You do not have to become Abraham's physical descendant to receive that blessing. God has made the way through Jesus Christ.

How Did Jesus Make Abraham's Blessing Available to Us?

Jesus made Abraham's blessing available to us by redeeming us from the curse of the law through His death on the cross.

Look carefully at Galatians 3:13. Paul explains that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

Why did Jesus have to do that? Because God was bringing His promise to fulfillment through Him.

Now read Galatians 3:14. It tells us that Abraham's blessing comes upon the Gentiles through Jesus Christ so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Mark that down. The blessing comes through Jesus Christ.

Abraham's natural descendants came through Isaac, Jacob, and the generations that followed. But when God extended His blessing to the Gentiles, He did it through Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit.

That is why I want you to understand the difference between natural descent and spiritual birth.

You are not born into this blessing merely because of your family background. You receive it through faith in Jesus Christ.

And when you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, the blessing of Abraham is upon you.

Why Is the Holy Spirit Part of Abraham's Blessing?

The Holy Spirit is part of Abraham's blessing because Galatians 3:14 connects that blessing directly to receiving the promise of the Spirit through faith.

What is the promise of the Father? The Holy Ghost!

After Jesus rose from the grave, He instructed His followers to wait in Jerusalem for the Father's promise.

And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were together in one accord. Suddenly, there came a sound from heaven like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the house where they were sitting.

They began speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Do you see what God was doing? Jesus had paid the price, and now the promised Holy Spirit had come.

This is why I keep telling you that salvation must come first. When the people asked Peter what they should do, he told them to repent and be baptized, and then they would receive the promise of the Holy Ghost.

And I want you to understand something else. Do not let anybody talk you out of the gifts of God. God has given those gifts for His people, and we must allow them to operate in our lives.

The blessing of Abraham is not simply a story about something God did thousands of years ago. Through Jesus Christ, that promise reaches believers today.

So believe God. Receive Jesus Christ. Welcome the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.

You are blessed with faithful Abraham through faith in Jesus Christ.
