You Are Sent, Not Just Saved

Adapted from the sermon “Sent With Power,” preached by Pastor Donald Gray on .

Sent With Power — watch the sermon on YouTube

From Luke 10 and Matthew 28: God is not only saving you, He is sending you. Here is what changes when you understand you were sent on purpose.

All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
Matthew 28:18–19

We are living in an age where God is sending us. Not preparing us to be sent one day when we feel ready. Sending us. I want you to hear that as a statement about you, right now, this week.

What does it mean that God sends you?

It means the assignment came before you felt qualified for it.

Turn to Luke 10:1–12. Jesus appoints others and sends them out ahead of Him. Notice He does not wait for them to reach some standard. He sends them.

Sent to do what? Sent to do the work of the ministry. God wants you to understand that you are sent by Him.

And He did not send you alone. He says, "I am the good shepherd." He sends you out, but He is the shepherd, and He has sent you the Holy Spirit to lead you. So the question was never whether you are smart enough to find the way. Sheep are not known for that. The shepherd is the point.

Whose authority am I going out under?

His, and it was settled before you got here.

Turn to Matthew 28:18–19. Jesus comes and speaks to them and says, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth." All of it. Then He says, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations."

Now catch this. Earlier, when He sent out His disciples the first time, that statement had not been made yet. He was moving on the power of the Holy Ghost and the power of God, because He said, "I only do what I see My Father do."

Now He has all authority — and the very next word out of His mouth is go. He is sending you out standing on something already finished.

So what am I supposed to do about it?

Say it about yourself, then move like it is true.

He is sending me out. Say that. Not the pastor is sent, not the missionary is sent — I am sent. That word has your name in it.

The reason this matters is that most of us are waiting to feel commissioned. You already are. The sending is not a feeling you receive, it is a fact you act on. Somebody at your job, on your block, in your family is a whole assignment, and you have been walking past it waiting for a clearer sign than Matthew 28.

Go therefore. That is the sign.

Questions from this reading

What does Luke 10 teach about being sent?
In Luke 10 Jesus appoints and sends others out ahead of Him. It establishes that being sent is normal Christian life, not a special assignment for a few. You are sent to do the work of the ministry.
What authority do we go with in Matthew 28?
Jesus says all authority has been given to Him in heaven and on earth, and then says go. You are not going out to acquire authority. You are going out under authority that has already been settled.
Am I qualified to be sent?
You are sent by Him, and He sent the Holy Spirit to lead you. Jesus calls Himself the good shepherd — the qualification is not your competence, it is who is leading you.
