Jehovah Shammah: God Is There Wherever You Go
Adapted from the sermon “Jehovah Shammah: God Is There,” preached by Pastor Donald Gray on .
Ezekiel 48:35 reveals Jehovah Shammah, the Lord who is there. Discover why you can trust God's presence wherever life takes you, even in difficult times.
The Lord Is There
Have you ever wondered whether God will be there when you reach the next place in your life? You don't know what tomorrow will bring. You don't know what challenges you may face. But I want you to understand something about your God. Wherever you are going, when you get there, God is there.
That's what I want you to see in the name Jehovah Shammah. It means "The Lord Is There." Your circumstances may change, but God's promise to be with you has not changed.
What Does Jehovah Shammah Mean in the Bible?
Jehovah Shammah means "The Lord Is There," and Ezekiel 48:35 reveals that name in the description of the city God showed Ezekiel.
When God gave Ezekiel the vision of the city, He described its measurements, its gates, and how everything would be arranged. But I want you to pay attention to what God said at the end. The city would be known by this name: "The Lord Is There."
Now, that's important. God wasn't simply showing Ezekiel a place. He was revealing something about His own presence.
When I was preparing to minister, I had already planned what I was going to preach. I had prepared my scriptures during the week, as I usually do. But that morning, God woke me up, and suddenly I heard those words so clearly: Jehovah Shammah.
I said, "Lord, what's that?" I knew what the name meant, but God was directing my attention to something He wanted His people to understand.
God is there.
Let me tell you something. No matter where you're going in your life, when you get there, God is there. He has promised never to leave you or forsake you.
Is God With You Even When Life Gets Difficult?
Yes, God is with you even when you are facing difficulties, opposition, and circumstances that seem greater than your strength.
You see, sometimes we look at our circumstances and forget how great our God really is. We begin comparing God with ourselves or with what another person can do. But you cannot compare God with anybody.
God must be God.
Think about the One who created the heavens and the earth. Think about the greatness of His creation. And then remember that this same God promises to be with His people.
I want you to stop looking at God as though He is limited by the things that limit you.
You may be going through something right now. That's life. If you're living life, you're going to go through some things. But that doesn't mean God has abandoned you.
The question is, where is God in your life? Are you looking only at the problem, or are you recognizing the God who is there with you?
Don't allow your circumstances to make your God look small. Start seeing Him for who He is.
What Can Shammah's Victory Teach Us About Trusting God?
Shammah's victory teaches us that we must stand firm in difficult situations and trust the Lord to bring us through.
Look at 2 Samuel 23:11. David's mighty men included a man named Shammah. The Philistines gathered together where there was a field full of lentils.
Now, understand why that field mattered. Those lentils were food for the people. They had planted that field, worked that ground, and depended on what it produced.
But when the Philistines came, the people fled.
Shammah did something different. According to 2 Samuel 23:12, he stood in the middle of that field and defended it. And the scripture tells us that the Lord brought about a great victory.
Did you catch that? Shammah stood, but the Lord brought the victory.
I want you to understand the importance of standing your ground. Sometimes trouble comes, and everything around you tells you to run. But when you know that God is with you, you can stand in faith.
You don't have to believe that the strength is all yours. The Lord is the One who brings the victory.
God is not simply there to watch what happens. He is there to fight for you. He is there to help you overcome.
Will God's Presence Remain With His People Forever?
Yes, God's promise goes beyond our present circumstances, because Revelation 21:3 describes a future in which God Himself dwells with His people.
When John describes the New Jerusalem, he shows us something wonderful about the future God has prepared. God will dwell with His people, and He Himself will be with them.
Can you imagine that?
The God who created the universe, who placed the stars and planets in space, says He will dwell with His people.
That's Jehovah Shammah.
I want you to recognize that God's presence is not just something we talk about when we gather in church. His promise concerns where you are now and where He is taking you.
So whatever you're facing, don't forget who your God is. Don't make Him small in your thinking. Remember how He has kept you and brought you this far.
And as you look toward what is ahead, keep this truth in your heart: wherever you go, whatever you face, and wherever God takes you, Jehovah Shammah is there.
